A centuries-old tradition in the heart of the Scottish Highlands on the doorstep of the Dunalastair Hotel Suites
What is it?
A staple of life in Kinloch Rannoch dating back all the way to the 1880s, the annual Highland Gathering is famed locally as the highlight of the region’s cultural and sporting calendar. These Highland games are authentic, organised by and for the locals, although tourists are welcomed to join in the experience of this exciting tradition.
The Gathering brings together age-old local customs with traditional highland games such as caber-tossing, highland dancing and hill racing. Alongside the competitions, the day is filled with entertainment from local pipers, highland dance troupes, and children’s entertainers, and there are stalls selling local produce.
The Hill Race, up and down Craig Varr is the toughest event of the day, and anyone over 15 is welcome to enter – although beware, this is only for the fittest of competitors! The mile-long route takes in a 1000ft climb and was started in 1958 by Major James de S. La Terriere, and was intended originally for shepherds, keepers and other locals.
The event is a must for a fun-filled family day out, and for hotel guests on the lookout for that truly authentic Scottish experience.
Where is it?
After spending its formative years in various locations around the loch, the Rannoch Highland Gathering has enjoyed a permanent home at Weller Poley Park in Kinloch Rannoch ever since the 1950s. The park is less than half-a-mile away from the Dunalastair hotel Suites’ holiday accommodation, and can be reached within a five minute walk over the River Tummel.
When is it?
Each year, the Highland Gathering takes place on the third Saturday in August, and has done every year since 1881, barring the odd World War! Festivities usually commence at 1.30pm and continue on into the evening. For more information, visit: rannochhighlandgathering.co.uk
