Those who came before us got everything just right long ago, especially when it came to the traditional Burns Supper.
At the heart of the meal is, of course, the haggis, a savoury pudding held in great reverence throughout the evening. The haggis is led into the room accompanied by a Scottish piper before the host recites Robert Burns famous piece, Address to a Haggis.
Guests are then invited to dine on the haggis, along with other uniquely Scottish delicacies such as neeps and tatties (turnips and potatoes).
Explore The Sights That Inspired The Bard of Ayrshire
Whilst the Burns Night festivities may be a highlight of your Scotland break this coming January, you’ll naturally want something to do during the daylight hours.
What better than venturing out into the Scottish Highlands to experience the same sense of wonder and inspiration that Robert Burns himself must have felt all those years ago.
Just a short drive from our luxury hotel in Kinloch Rannoch you’ll find Kenmore, a village small in size but vast in fascinating history and remarkable beauty.
Such is the enchanting scenery surrounding Kenmore that, on a visit to the area in 1787, The Bard was inspired to inscribe a verse upon the chimney-piece of the local inn. It survives today, and reads:
‘Admiring Nature in her wildest grace,
These northern scenes with weary feet I trace:
O’er many a winding dale and painful steep.
h’ abodes of covey’d grouse and timid sheep,
My savage journey, curious, I pursue
Till famed Breadalbane opens to my view.
The meeting cliffs each deep-sunk glen divides –
The woods, wild scatter’d. clothe their ample sides:
Th’ outstretching lake, embosom’d mid the hills,
The eye with wonder and amazement fills:
The Tay, meand’ring sweet in infant pride:
The palace rising on its verdant tide:
The lawns, wood-fring’d in Nature’s native taste:
The hillocks, dropt in Nature’s careless haste:
The arches. striding o’er the new-born stream:
The village. glittering in the noontide beam.’
Nearby, you’ll also find Blair Atholl, where Burns stayed with the Duke of Atholl during the same time that he visited Kenmore.
Rabbie was also said to have visited Falls of Moness and written a song which gave this majestic gorge the name we know it as today – The Birks of Aberfeldy.
