Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Exploring the Schiehallion Mountain on Your Next Scottish Holiday

Looming large and majestic among the awe-inspiring surroundings of our Highland Perthshire hotel, the Schiehallion mountain has long been one of Scotland’s most famous Munros.

Rivalled only by the likes of Ben Nevis in terms of popularity, tackling this monumental mountain is an absolute must for any Scottish walking holiday, as scores of past Dunalastair Hotel Guests are often quick to confirm.

Among those guests we’ve spoken to, the allure of the mighty Schiehallion is two-fold.

On the one hand, its reputation as one of the country’s easiest Munros to conquer means it’s an ideal starting point for those on their first Highland walking break. On the other, it’s still challenging enough to provide that wonderful sense of accomplishment when you do finally scale the summit.

If one of your goals for 2018 is to take on the Schiehallion yourself, here’s just a few things you should know before you do.

When is the Best Time to Explore the Schiehallion Mountain?

Whether it’s the glistening, snow-covered vistas of a Scottish winter or the gorgeous array of light and colour blossoming from the hills and valleys at the height of spring, no matter what time of year you take your adventure break in Scotland, you’re guaranteed an unforgettable view.

That said, looks aren’t always everything.

Indeed, it pays to be mindful of the Highland’s notoriously temperamental climate and conditions if your journey to the summit of the Schiehallion Mountain is going to be a success.

With that in mind, guests at the Dunalastair Hotel Suites in Kinloch Rannoch tell us that the summer months provide the opportune time to strap up their boots and take on this impressive challenge.

Though the weather is prone to frequent changes (more of that in a moment), you’ll find that the months between June and September present a climate that is neither too hot (no buckets of sweat) nor too cold (no visit from Jack Frost either), and that the views -bursting to life with a vibrant array of colours- are simply spectacular.

What Should I wear?

As we’ve already touched upon, Scotland’s weather can be, well, let’s just call it ‘a little erratic.’

To give you some idea of what we mean, we refer you to the old joke about the Scotsman who experienced spring, summer, autumn and winter all within the space of a day.

As such, it’s advised that on any Highland walking holiday, you bring clothes that are light yet sturdy, and most importantly, comfortable.

A waterproof jacket that can be folded away neatly in your backpack and put on quickly will prove to be your best friend in case of showers, and solid boots are absolutely essential.

Our advice -and the advice of our guests- is to expect all weathers when packing for your adventure break in Scotland and be mindful that -even on warm, summer days- the air at the peak of the Schiehallion mountain can get pretty cold.

With that in mind, wearing layers and being prepared for the coldest of your journey is highly recommended.

How Long Does it Take?

This will largely depend on your levels of fitness and experience, though guests tackling their first ever Munro often report finishing times of around five hours.

The seasoned hikers among you may find you can complete the whole route faster, likely between three and four hours, though again, issues such as the changing weather may slow you down if you’re not fully prepared.

Will I Need to Take Lunch?

More than likely, yes.

You won’t find a Costa Coffee or a McDonalds at the peak of the Schiehallion Mountain, it’s just you and the Great Outdoors.

We do, however, have some good news.

If you’re staying at the Dunalastair Hotel Suites in Kinloch Rannoch on your Scottish walking holiday, the staff at our Monadh Dining will be glad to prepare you a fresh packed lunch to take on your trip – including your choice of sandwiches, snack, and a drink.
