Etape Caledonia

Sunday, May 21st, 2017.

Pitlochry

Often described as the most scenic, closed-road sportive anywhere in the United Kingdom, the annual Marie Curie Etape Caledonia sees even the most experienced of cyclists pushed to their very limits as they tackle 81 miles of Highland terrain.

Whether it’s the gruelling climb up the majestic Schiehallion mountain or the exhilarating sweep through glorious, forest-lined roads, the lengthy course presents a challenge for cyclists of all abilities, many of whom travel from across the UK just to take part.

It isn’t just the competitors themselves who you’ll find heading to Perthshire this may. As arguably the most popular event of any kind in the area, the Etape Caledonia’s Event Village and associated fundraising activities attract huge crowds, and you can well expect to find most hotels in Pitlochry booked with both participants and well-wishers alike, not to mention those attending just for the fun of soaking up the event’s unique atmosphere.

Athol Gathering

Atholl Gathering

Saturday, May 27 and Sunday May 28, 2017

Blair Castle, Blair Atholl.

Whether you’re taking part or not, staying on at your luxury hotel in Perthshire for a week following the Marie Curie Etape Caledonia means you’ll be just in time to experience some truly authentic Scottish culture at the yearly Atholl Gathering.

A Bank Holiday weekend tradition dating back several generations, the outdoor event is set in the truly incredible surroundings of Blair Castle itself, and brings a wealth of historic Scottish customs together with family-friendly activities and a chance to gain a rare insight into Highland life.

The focal point of the two-day event is Saturday’s parade by the Atholl Highlanders, the only remaining private army in Europe. On Sunday, it’s the turn of the classic Highland Games to keep attendees entertained, with strong men descending upon Perthshire to duke it out in traditional events such as caber tossing, hammer throwing, and shot putting.

Solas Festival

Friday, June 23 to Sunday, June 25, 2017

The Bield at Blackruthven, Perthshire

T in the Park may be on hiatus in 2017, but that doesn’t mean that music fans have to miss out on the chance to soak up a festival atmosphere with a truly Scottish flavour.

This summer, one of the country’s fastest growing festivals, Solas, returns to Perthshire for three days of music, art, culture, and more.

An all-ages, all-inclusive event like nothing else in the Highlands, the term “something for everyone” has never been more appropriate than it is at Solas.

In previous years, the event has hosted everything from theatre productions and film showings to children’s workshops, DJ sets, and live music from both upcoming and established artists. This year, expect plenty more of the same, all with the Solas’ famous chilled out ambiance and feel good vibes.

Blair Castle International Horse Trials & Country Fair

Thursday, August 24th to Sunday, August 27th, 2017

Blair Castle, Blair Atholl

Right throughout the year, the truly remarkable Blair Castle remains a firm favourite with those staying in Pitlochry and the surrounding areas for their Scotland holiday. Yet when late summer arrives, there’s much more than the castle’s ancient history and captivating scenery to admire.

For four whole days, the venue plays host to the annual Blair Castle Equi-Trek International Horse Trials & County Fair, an event where both Olympic superstars from across the globe and passionate, local amateurs can be found competing in a host of equestrian events.

Whilst the horse trials are known throughout Scotland -and indeed, throughout the equestrian world- for the caliber of competition on display, the events themselves are not the only reason why Blair Castle is the place to be in late August.

On Saturday and Sunday, the annual Country Fair takes place, showcasing everything from traditional pursuits to adrenalin-charged activities like quad biking.

A family-friendly favourite, be sure to make this one a part of your summer holiday in the highlands.
